Welcome to the project "Von der Flut in die Glut / Floods to Fires." Our aim is to raise awareness of the connectedness of ecological disasters and raise money for those affected by the flooding in Germany. We will journey by bicycle to the fire zones in the Balkans and bring along a bottle of water from the flood areas in Germany. A symbolic gesture that may not quell the fires or alleviate the sense of helplessness in the face of global warming and the associated ecological chaos, but it is a gesture - a first step in a longer journey.

Veganism and Rainbow families

 We are finally on the road - 3 days, 300 kilometers and 4,200 meters altitude. So far, our route has led us through three Austrian provinces, Lower Austria, Styria, and Carinthia to Kranj, the capital of the Slovenian Alps. The bottle of water from the flood regions has survived the journey, although we had to cycle back to pick it up, switch it from my bicycle to Silke‘s, and pack it tightly so that it doesn‘t fall off the back rack. In Trattenbach, Lower Austria, we had the opportunity to stay at the farmhouse of a vegan activist and in Graz, Styria we stayed with a rainbow family that is car-free and ecologically aware. Both encounters led to long talks and hope for the future. Our bottle of water is just a symbolic drop to alleviate the helplessness - and conversations, and cycling, and not giving up.

Ri: Rijeka

Today we explored Rijeka and on the way, met Luca from Molekula  Www.molekula.org  (in Croatian). We were walking along the working freight port and his dog started barking at us, but he called him in and we struck up a conversation. Luca told us about his work creating art and use objects with recycled wood, and showed us inside the space he and Molekula had created in one of the warehouses - using all salvaged materials. They truly follow the motto on their sign: ri:use, ri:think, ri:make. And to get ready for work they make music. Luca also told us about the town and the political and economic woes. He said that there is no industry, no jobs, and even the refugees who make their way to Rijeka want to leave. „Look around, all white Christians“ he pointed out.  One bonus of no industry is a health(ier) environment- clean ocean water to swim in, right in the city. European Cultural Capital 2020 - a town caught in the throes of dying and being reborn. An interview with Luka will follow.
